Never before have I been truly sad to see summer come! I think last year I was totally relieved to have high school done, but still really nervous and scared for what was to come (all of the unknowns of college!) I have great memories from senior year, but I was still ready for something new.............................

................Let me tell you, I have definitely found what I was looking for at Luther!
Seriously, I have two new best friends. I truly already know that we are perfect for each other- people think that we are sisters because we all look alike! Plus, we get along really well, all bringing a little different personality to the group. I love my best friends from high school- I really never thought that I could have that feeling about other people, but it totally happened!

Seniors, I hope you took advantage of your last spring in high school (and your last time on top!- For some reason, seniors in college aren't excited to be there because it means that they have to go into the real world after that.) High school was such a special time, preparing you with those life long friends that will always be there for you, like mine, even when your hundreds of miles away. One is in Texas, one is in Oklahoma, and I'm in Iowa- but we are always excited to see each other on breaks! Don't dismay- you will see high school people again! Now is the time to look forward to all of the new friendships and relationships that you are going to make!

I'm sure that I have rambled in this blog a lot. It is just so hard to believe that my first year is already over though! It took me such a long time to adjust to the idea that I was actually in college, that it was all actually happening! And now suddenly, I'm spending my last night in the dorm, and my title has officially become "sophomore"- when did this happen??? :)

Ladies and Gents, if anyone has questions about college- packing, how to call the future roomie without awkwardness, how to let go of the parents, how to teach your parents to let go (believe this is necessary!), or any details about life at Luther (or college in general)- please feel free to email me at loofan01@luther.edu. I would love to chat with any of you!

Thank you all for going with me on this amazing new chapter of my life! I know without a doubt that God put me at Luther for a reason; He found the perfect home away from home for me, and I can not wait to return in the fall!

Have a great summer everyone!
Good luck packing for college!!!
~Anna

(And one last time!) She recounted the events of that fatal day when 389 undocumented immigrant workers were rounded up by 900 heavily armed operatives. Many are now on house arrest, unable to work or provide for their families. For 12 months, these people have been living off of donations from others- women even have tracking devices around their ankles! Some have even been sent back to Mexico, 55 adults and close to 100 children, most of whom have never even been there before.
I was in shock- I had never heard about this tragedy in so much detail before. The speaker's words moved me, and the rest of the audience, to silent tears. It was very difficult to hear, but I know that it is important to know the truth of that day. Please keep all of those effected by the raid in your prayers, and as the speaker said, pray for our congressmen to find a solution to the problems surrounding illegal immigration.

On Tuesday, I was locked in my room, writing a ten page research paper for religion. Ugh. Thankfully, it's done. (It had to be since it was due on Wednesday!!!) I've had three papers to do this week- 2 down, 1 to go! It's nice to know that you're on your last assignment for the year....that is, before starting to study for finals....not that, I haven't started studying mom :) No, I actually did start studying this morning. Teachers told me all throughout high school to not cram last minute, to study in increments. I can't believe I didn't try it until college!!

To all the graduating seniors, enjoy this last week or two! College is a whole new world, and school will never feel the same again!

~Anna

"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.,
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me." ~Psalm 23: 1, 4

On the Count Down...

Hey y'all!

I'm sure all of the seniors out there are feeling serious senioritis by now- hang in there! Try to enjoy your final days of high school!

This past weekend was super fun for me! Friday evening was the Aurora spring concert. Not only did it go great, I also got to enjoy it with 10 members of my family! I'm pretty sure my fan base took up a whole row of seats! I felt way cool with everyone crowded around me after the concert! I have really enjoyed singing in the choir this year. I had tried out on a whim, and in a blink of an eye, the year is almost over already! On Wednesday I'll be auditioning, trying to get in to either Cathedral or Cantorei...Wish me luck!

Later Friday night, I headed down to the indoor at Regents for Luther College's Relay For Life night. I had a great time walking and hanging out with my team....and my mom! (Nothing new there!) We had a lot of fun together! The next day she took me out to breakfast, and then we went to the baseball game- which the Norse won!! Whoop whoop!

I hope everyone is enjoying the weather as much as I am! It is making it impossible for me to get anything accomplished! But with two weeks left, that's ok with me! :)

Bye for now y'all!
~Anna

"Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. On Friday, my dad came down (my parents here? What a surprise!!!) for my sister's golf tournament. We had a lot of fun, especially since it was in the high 80s!!! Can you believe it?!? But, alas, Saturday and Sunday turned in to cold and rainy. Typical Iowa!

On Saturday, my uncle came down for a late birthday celebration. The group went to T Bock's, the local burger joint, and we had a great time watching the Mavs game! The evening ended with an intense card game night; it's funny because I used to play cards all the time, and it had been months (or has it been years?) since last night! If anyone is in need of a good, chill-time activity, play a card game: for old school- try Hearts, for new age- try Revolution, and if you're really gutsy- try 500! I promise you won't be disappointed with the great time you have!

I'm starting to feel the pull towards Finals week happening. Relay is already on Friday, my audition for next year's choir is the following Wednesday, and only 3 weeks of school left! It has really made me wonder....how can I still have so much to do?????

The thing about the Finals "pull" is that it is equivalent to a fast speed, no breaks, tail-spin into studying, final papers, wrap-up club activities, end of the year parties, and all of the usual obligations that you had in high school. The only wonderful difference with college is that you also have to think about packing!!! Uh-oh! Have I ever mentioned that I'm the slowest packer ever? (I know others have claimed that title, but seriously, I should've started packing a week ago if I really wanted to be done on time!)

Thankfully, I'm only starting to feel the pull; I haven't actually been sucked into the chaos and high stress levels yet!

Stay strong seniors! Don't get overwhelmed!!!

"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." ~1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18

Celebrating my 19th Birthday

As luck would have it, my birthday fell on the day that I would have to fly back to campus. I was disappointed to think that I would be spending the majority of my day in the airport, on a plane, and then in the car driving back to campus.

Actually, it turned out to be perfect!!!

Not only did I get the benefits of special treatment from my parents, but I also got to celebrate with friends back home and friends here at school. I know a lot of kids are pretty disappointed to have their birthday during school because then you just get a "Happy Birthday!" in passing, maybe a card or two (versus the tons of attention that parents give to you throughout the day- not too mention when mom makes your favorite meals!)

I was so happy to have my family around to make the weekend all about me. I got to pick where we ate and what activities we did! This included a visit to PF Chang's for my Chinese food fix and to Cristina's for my favorite Mexican dish before having to head back to Iowa. We also spent Saturday night in an intense game of 500 (a card game involving partners, lots of strategy, and of course, lots of "table-talk"- aka, lively banter that you could only get away with in the presence of family!) My mom, sister, and I also got to spend a majority of the weekend shopping- always a plus!

My actual birthday was yesterday- the 13th. And, instead of a boring flight and car ride, my sister made it totally amusing! She decided to tell everyone in the airport that it was my special day- this included security guards, the ladies in Starbucks (who broke out in a beautiful, jazzy version of Happy Birthday), and even the pilot of our plane- who proceeded to announce it over the intercom for everyone to hear and look at me. Not that I revel in attention, but who wouldn't be flattered by that?!?

Then, we got to stop in Rochester on our way back to campus for dinner at Olive Garden with some other friends also heading back to campus. It was great to taste my favorite meals one more time before returning to the caf!

Upon arriving at campus, happy with the way the day turned out, and sad it was over, I made it to my door.......when I opened it, my five closest friends were there with presents, a birthay banner, and tons of food! It was AWESOME!!! I was shocked that they went to all the trouble that they did! It made me feel so special and it totally reminded me of how lucky I am to have stumbled on such a sweet, amazing group of friends (they deserve to have their names mentioned: Allison, Christy, Emma, Ryan, and Taylor)- I know that I'll have them forever, no doubt in my mind. I want them in my life (and not just because of last night's excitement!)

Even Luther College came through for me- today in my SPO was a note for a cake baked by the Women's League- mmm, mmm angel food!

Birthdays are always great, but never have I gotten to experience one with both my home friends and family and my new college friends (basically family) too. It has been utterly fantastic!

I hope everyone can take a second to appreciate the gifts in their lives: family, friends, and all of their loved ones.

Have a great week!

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not sne his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." -John 3: 16-17
I hope everyone had a happy and blessed Easter!

Nordic and a Little More Spring Break

Left: Me, overlooking the beautiful city of Erfurt in

Eastern Germany

Right: The group with Martin on a beautiful, snowy day in

Dresden, Germany in front of the breathtaking Our Lady Cathedral

Hey y'all!

Last night was the Nordic Choir Spring Concert, and it was wonderful! My RA, Laura, is in the choir and she looked so beautiful on stage. Every song was special and moving-they sang for two hours! I was so excited when they sang their Christmas at Luther pieces again. Even though we were pretty tired of the music by the end of Christmas at Luther week, it was so nice to hear Nordic's songs again. It was especially wonderful to hear the closing song "Wonderful Peace" because I was always so touched by this song during CAL week and I still listen to it regularly now.

I also want to write a little bit more about my trip last week.

You can see from the pictures at the top that we left Decorah in cold weather and arrived in Germany to find...more cold weather. Of course, that was expected, and it gave me an excuse to wear my long underwear one more time this year. Even in the worst of the rain and the snow though, we never stopped having a good time, enjoying the company and reveling in everything Martin Luther! I'm sure it's easy to notice that in the picture in the top right, we are even holding a Luther College banner. Basically, it's because we like to represent. The Looft family/friends are hard core. And, something even more special is that everyone in that picture went to or is currently atteding Luther College. Three generations are in that picture! I just can't get over how awesome it is to share in the Luther experience with so many other people who are in my family and close to me.

It was especially nice to be with them as I learned more about Luther himself; it was great to see the Luther haus, his tombstone, and the famous door in Wittenberg; where he was born and died in Eisleben; where he preached in Eislenach and Erfurt; the Wartburg castle where he translated the Bible into German...obviously I could go on and on!

Overall, it was a great trip that not only extended my historical knowledge, but also helped me put the founder of my denomination of Christianity into perspective.

I hope everyone had a great break and has also recovered from it!

~Anna

"Pray continually." ~I Thessalonians 5:17

Spring Break Recap

Hey y'all!

I hope everyone had a great, safe spring break! You know it was a good time when you need a vacation from your vacation! That is exactly how I'm feeling now. Unfortunately, no such luck! While I'm struggling with the time zone change and jet lag, I'm also back into the hectic life of spring semester.

I can't believe we have less than 7 weeks left! My freshman year is fast coming to a close- I can't imagine what's going through the mind of a senior. (Denial most likely!)

It's funny how perspectives change: senior year I couldn't wait to get out of high school and just be done. Now, I'm actually sad to think that this year might end, that one fourth of my experience in college will soon be over. It's unbelievable how fast it goes!!!

However, let's talk about something less depressing! I just got back from an amazing week in Germany! It was the experience of a life time, not only did I visit ten different towns and witness the amazing cultural differences of each place, I also got to do it with nine of my family members, sharing this time with them. It was really special to have my grandparents along; I know I need to treasure every moment I have left with them, but it's not at all hard for me to want to!! I brought back special memories with them that I know I'll never forget!

Although they may not be too happy about it, I added some pictures at the top which highlight my time with my grandparents (and do not in anyway make fun of how we all lookedwith our hoods on!)

Enjoy!

~Anna

"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it." ~Matthew 13: 44-46

Can't Wait for Break!!!

So like my last post so eloquently said, I'm busy and stressed. Pretty much to the max. But as I continue to check things off my list, I can start looking forward to Friday. Obviously, not to the two midterms that I have to take, but to what comes after they are over.

I know a lot of my friends are looking forward to going home, sitting around, vegging, and most importantly, relaxing. That sounds pretty nice......but not terribly exciting either. :)

I'm frantically working this work, but not because I want lots of free time over break. I'm working my tail off (running on barely six hours of sleep every night- ugh!) so that next week, when this is all over, and I'm not worrying about homework anymore,.....I can go to Germany!!!!

I'm SOOOOOO excited!!!!! My whole family is going together. We have enough people going (10) that we get to have our own personal tour guide. My grandma actually got to plan the trip herself! And, as any good upstanding Lutheran woman would do, she decided that the trip's theme would be "A Walk in the Life of Martin Luther." No really, I'm not kidding. :) We're really doing that. It just wouldn't be proper for a group of Lutheran Norwegians to travel to Germany and not pay the proper respect to Luther that he deserves! We'll visit where he grew up, where he nailed the ninety-five theses, where he was married, etc...

Of course, if you're not Lutheran and have no idea what I'm talking about you should know that we're also visiting a bunch of other places as well, including castles, a concentration camp, the city of Berlin and so much more! I'm not really familiar with famous places in Germany, but I'm sure when I get back I'll have lots to tell!

Seniors, here's another verse for stress and anxiety, which I know I'm still feeling this week
Safe travels!
~Anna

"No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with testing he will also provide the way out that you may be able to endure it." -I Corithians 10: 13

Fickle Fate

Fate is a funny thing. One day you might have absolutely no cares in the world...and the next day you're guaranteed to be busy from when you open your eyes that morning to when your head hits the pillow at night.

For instance, last week was relatively low-key for me. I was able to do a little delaying and procrastinating, and still managed to finish what I needed to, in a reasonable time.

And (of course!) Fate would have it that the week before spring break, when I'm trying to pack, clean, get laundry together, and find the passport, I also have a major paidiea paper due (not quite written), job applications to turn in (not quite finished), a resume for my job applications to create (also not quite finished), a religion project (...to start!), J-term study abroad opportunities to start looking at, rooming options for next year to figure out, doctor appointments to go to, the usual homework to finish, and -oh yeah, one more tiny little thing- MIDTERMS TO STUDY FOR!!!

Needless to say, I'm a bit frazzled. To say the least, I'm stressing. Unnecessary to mention, I'm getting just a little frantic. -Ok, you get the picture!-

I wish I had some clever, pithy saying to make my week thus far seem comical, and light-hearted. How about..... It's only Monday!

I hope Seniors, like myself, remember to breathe, stay focused, and Getter done!
It also wouldn't hurt to say a quick prayer and to read the verse at the bottom of this blog :)
Good luck y'all!
~Anna

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." ~Philippians 4: 6-7

The Mikado

There are many awesome opportunities to partake in at Luther. I have always known of the sports, classes, J-term study abroad, clubs, and choral activities. But, what I didn't realize is that Luther offers a plethora of CAF sponsored shows.

Tonight's show was an opera entitled "The Mikado." I've never been to an opera before, so I was a little wary of what to expect from the night. I thought it would be five hours of really high-pitched singing that you couldn't understand anyway because it's in another language.

Boy, was I wrong!!!

The opera was in English. The singing was absolutely stunning! It was only three hours. :) And, much to my surprise, it was really comical! The jokes were great (a few Luther references were even dropped, including one about the Whippy Dip!) My roommate, Christy, and I laughed the entire second half!

It was a really nice break from the crazy week (especially the Paideia research papers going on right now!) Once again I'm reminded how awesome it is to be going to Luther! Everyday something proves that it's the perfect fit for me!

I hope all of the Seniors are loving life-and that Senioritis hasn't quite set in yet! (At least make it until Spring Break!)

~Bye y'all!
Anna

"The Lord is my sheperd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." ~Psalm 23: 4

Random (Awesome) Opportunities

Hey y'all!

I think I'll use this blog to just catch everybody up with what's been going on lately...

Last weekend, the Harlem Gospel Choir visited Luther. Aurora and Norsemen had a private workshop with this AWESOME choir on Saturday. That night I went to their concert which was absolutely spectacular! Besides the moving songs and beautiful voices, they also had no problem giving a totally Christian message. It was just so cool! Then on Sunday at church, we got to sing throughout the service with them. Everybody got really into it, clapping and shouting "Amen!" (Who'd of thought at a Lutheran service?!?) ;)

Last week was the Relay 4 Life kick-off night. This was in preparation for an awesome relay day that'll be happening on May 1st. You join a team (I'm trying to get our hall to participate) where you raise money for cancer victims living in our area of upper Iowa. On the actual date, everyone comes together to walk around the track from 7 pm to 6 am- that's right- the whole night! It's a ton of fun, and I'm really excited to be a part of it! (More on this as we get closer...)

Last night I went to Ash Wednesday Service at the CFL. It was a beautiful service; Collegiate Choir sang, and it was just so touching for this solemn occassion. The coolest part was that after the service when I got back to my dorm, marked with the sign of the cross on my forehead in ash, I got the opportunity to testify about Christ!! A girl on my floor didn't know what Ash Wednesday was, or Lent either, and we ended up talking about it for like half an hour. I always get really nervous talking about God, but she was just so interested, asking all of these questions, that it ended up being really easy to do. It's really cool that God can put these random opportunities right in front of you. You don't have to go door-to-door to evangelize- there are really chances all around you, even when you're not really looking! :)

Much love!

~Anna

"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin."
                                                                                                                                     ~Psalm 51: 1-2

The Oscars!!!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I always look forward to the Oscars! It's so exciting to see who will win big this year (Way to go Slumdog and Kate!) And of course, it's always wonderful to look at all of the dazzling gowns!

This year, I got to do a lot more than just watch the Oscars. I was invited to an "Oscar party"- formal attire required! It was so much fun! We all came together in our favorite prom dresses or suits and enjoyed the Academy Awards in style in the luxurious comfort of a fourth floor suite room in Brandt. (They house four to a room, and they're huge!)

I have some bigger reasons for dedicating a blog to this topic than just the special evening tho.

Tonight I realized how lucky I am to have a group of friends who aren't afraid to get a little creative with their activities. We know how to have a good time. And it didn't take one drop of alcohol to do it.

I was always nervous about my transition into the college scene. Because you know every single person drinks every single weekend- and I have to do it to really enjoy college right?!?

SO WRONG! Alcohol isn't everywhere, in every hall way waiting to snatch you into the "party scene." Everyone isn't constantly pressuring you to partake in it-
Because not everybody does it. Not even all of the "cool" kids. I would know because I was with a lot of them tonight- that's right!- volleyball players, choral members, and theatre performers all came and stayed the whole night without wandering off to find the keg.

My point: If you're not ready for alcohol, don't be nervous! You don't have to be!!! College is so much more than I thought it would be. I always have plans on the weekends, even though they don't involve alcohol!

Much love!
~Anna

"O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. It's an excuse for no homework and TV all day long. You get ice cream and a chance to watch your favorite movies. It basically rocks!

When you get sick in high school it all changes. During these four years, you are so busy that no time is a good time to get sick. Trying to stay caught up on your school work while also keeping your starting spot on the volleyball team while also staying involved with all of your clubs and acitivities is tough work.

There's only one thing that is harder than getting sick in high school. And that is getting sick in college....without your mommy.

I was sick all last week with a sinus infection. I had to figure out how to get my prescription, how to get food, and how to keep making sure that I got enough sleep...not too mention keeping up with all of my school work, talking to my profs, trying to not let anyone down with my volunteer activities, and of course, trying to stay on track with my various jobs.

This was quite a daunting task, and obviously I had a lot of missteps. I slipped up here and there, (notice my lack of blog last week?) and I had to ask a lot of favors from people.
-Shout out to my sister, Emily, who graciously got my groceries and prescriptions for me! Love you!!!

Thankfully, I'm at Luther College. It's a place where after only one semester, I already have life-long friends who were there for me, helping me every step of the way. It's a place where my profs were beyond supportive, giving me plenty of time to catch back up, not wanting me to get too overwhelmed. It's a place where my bosses, especially Julie Chamberlain and Marty Berg, said "No sweat. Feel better!" when I needed a few days off.

It wasn't quite my mommy...but it was definitely the next best thing!

Bye y'all!
~Anna

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end." It is referring to President John F. Kennedy's assassination and the theories surrounding it. It's the topic of my research paper for my J-term class.

Sorry that this blog is a day late, but all week long every spare moment I had to was devoted to researching JFK and writing what would become a fourteen page paper. This morning I presented my findings to the class with my conclusion on the non-conspiracy/conspiracy debate.

Seriously, I feel like a JFK expert now! I'm not going to actually get into my conclusion right now, but if anyone is interested about the evidence or what the "answer" is to the question then feel free to shoot me a comment! I'm not going to get into it now b/c I don't want to offend either side of the argument.....Did you know that over 2,000 books have been written about it? And at least 30 people have confessed to being a shooter/conspirator? Sadly, their testimony isn't very legit, but my point is it's amazing how absorbed people can become! There are really people out there who have devoted their time to trying to "crack the mystery!!"

While I don't think that I'm that passionate about the case, it did give me insight into how much I enjoy history. As a freshman, I'm still toying with what I want to major in. This class definitely showed me how much I would enjoy studying history and pursuing a career that involved a histoy major. I guess we'll have to see what happens this next semester when I finally get to take an in depth math class, another major that I'm thinking about. It's so hard to decide when I like so many different subjects!

Conclusion: J-term rocks! Even in Decorah :)

Stay warm! (It's all I think about these days!)
~Anna

"O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord."
                                                                                                                                  ~Psalm 139:1-4

The Temperature (What Else?!?)

There is only one topic I would like to discuss today. It may not seem very exciting or enthralling for a blog. But it is the only thing shaping my life right now. It's all I can think about...........................The temperature!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was in Texas for winter break, it was 75 degrees Christmas day. A few days later, we hit a record high of 83! It was very difficult for me to board the plane to once again return to this frost bitten land that I consider parallel to a tundra. And now that I'm here, it's even harder to stay!!! When I walked to class this morning it was -22! As in the actual temperature not considering the wind chill factor! I've been in total shock since I returned. It's amazing to see that people can survive in this weather at all- although my mother does keep sending me helpful emails of statistics which claim that in these conditions frost bite is possible after only two minutes. Yes, those words have really comforted my fears about having to walk across campus. Thanks mom.

Originally I planned on camping out in my room and having my roommate bring me food from the caf. But as I sat here before lunch, my tummy rumbling, I decided that half the experience of going to college was trying new things, conquering my fears, and taking on new heights (or temperatures for that matter.) So instead of sulking in the comfort of my heating blanket, I put on my coat, boots, long johns, long sleeve shirt, sweatshirt, socks, extra socks, scarf, mitten, ear warmers (you get the picture!) and I ventured out. I left behind my room and the serenity (and warmth) of Brandt to trek across campus towards the union for a nice hot lunch.

So, having made it back to my room, with a nice full stomach, I can proudly admit that I survived the elements!!!
WARNING: For all of you looking at colleges and considering one in the north, preferably Luther, I have to confess- cold weather isn't for everyone. It's cold. Sometimes depressing. Sometimes it takes a toll on your endurance.

But if I can do it, a lil girl from Dallas, Texas, then honestly, anyone can! When you find a perfect fit like Luther, tough things like subzero temperatures don't faze you as much. Getting to have your perfect college experience makes crazy new obstacles totally worth it.

Wow, I never thought that I could write so much about the weather! Anyway...

Stay warm! Be careful! Don't get frostbite! (My mother is worried for us all!!!!)
And have a great week!

~Anna~

"Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. Here is a trustworthy saying: If we die with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself."
                                                                                                                              ~ 2 Timothy 2: 10-13

Dorian

Hey everybody!

What a weekend! Yesterday was the Dorian Festival which is for high school choir students. 790 kids were here yesterday and again today. (That's bigger than the freshman class!!!) Last night, was the first concert where both Aurora and Norsemen sang- it was much less stress than Christmas at Luther! Still, we came prepared with three rehearsals in a row last week and a confident performance last night!

As you can imagine, 790 students also had to have a place to sleep last night. We had three girls in our tiny room! They invaded study lounges in all the dorms, many many rooms, and even a side gym down in Regents! It's been crazy- but of course, a good time!

We thought it would just be a one night deal, but with the impending weather approaching- (I'm not sure how bad it's going to be since no one will tell me knowing how anti-blizzard I am!) it seems that a lot of students will be staying another night. It was comical how jam-packed we were last night....Whose up for Round 2?!?

I hope everyone has a super duper SAFE week! Be careful!

~Anna

"The Lord has done great things for us; of which we are glad!" -Psalm 126: 3

Here Comes J-term!!

Hey everybody!

I hope everyone made it safely back to school! My flight went smoothly- although it took most of my will power to actually leave the 80 degree weather in order to return to the artic tundra that awaited me- and it was only after I landed that I hit a little hitch. Long story short, I drove the totally opposite, wrong direction trying to get back to campus and added an extra three hours to the original one hour drive. My only defense is that I'm a Texas girl trying to fend for myself, amid these strange Iowa cornfields and small towns. I know, it's not a very good defense....

Anyway, on to J-term! ;)

It's a three week long class during January that serves as a great opportunity to try something new! You take the same class everyday; it can be anything from biology to pottery to the origins of hip hop dancing to films in German history to...you get my drift! It can be a time to not only fulfill some credit requirements, but also a time to try something totally new! Plus, starting sophomore year, students may travel abroad on any number of trips around the world. My sister is, as we speak, on a four week trip from Hong Kong to Japan to Australia. How cool is that?!?

I can't wait for that chance! However, I don't want to undermine my awesome experience happening during my own first J-term spent in Decorah. This is a really fun time because all of the freshman are here together. Campus seems quite but not in the freshman dorms!! I know I'll enjoy this time with my friends! We'll never have this chance to be altogther again with so much free time on our hands!

All of my friends and I brought back tons of movies to watch, books to read, and activities we want to try! Yeah, I could be on vacation still, but I'd rather be here (despite the cold!!!) enjoying a special experience only known to other Luther students!

Keep warm and have a great start to your second semester seniors!!! (It's downhill from here!)
Anna

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power...Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace." ~Ephesians 6: 10, 13-15

Merry Christmas!!!

Season's Greetings!

I hope everyone is having a fantastic break! The only thing better than having exams over with, is having Christmas Break start!!! Seniors- way to go! Exams are done!!! (I don't seem excited do I?) I wish I could tell you that your done with them, but unfortunately they just keep coming. But hey, I survived right? No problem!!

Anyway, on to more exciting matters! As many of you may have assumed with three generations of my family going to Luther, I am in fact......is the suspense killing you?.....Norwegian! Which of course means that we celebrate a very fun, very Norwegian Christmas!

After church this evening, we'll come back for a traditional Norwegian meal- including all the usual entrees: ham, rutabagas, green bean casserole, lefsa (a wonderful tradition to keep: it's like a Mexican tortilla but made from potatoes and flour. Served warm with butter and sugar for a fantastic finish!), and last but still least-you Norwegians out there won't actually believe we still do this. Even our family in Norway doesn't eat this stuff anymore!- LUTEFISK!!! If you don't know what that is I'm going to spare you a description- this is supposed to be "G" rated after all. If you do know what this lovely fish is, please, I BEG OF YOU, say a prayer for me! I am forced to eat it before I can open presents!!!! ............Uff da!

Besides the way-too-Norwegian-for-my-taste meal, we also sing carols for hours around the piano. Now when I say carols, I'm not talking one or two or ten. I'm talking about every verse of every single carol from the secular to religious. No but's about it- We all sit down, grit our teeth, and crank 'em out. After the fourth verse of "Silent Night" (sung in Norwegian although none of us know what we're saying), we sit down for dessert. This includes some amazing yummies from turtles, divinity, and krum kakke to pumpkin and pecan pie and peanut brittle (Oh- did I mention it's ALL home made?!? That's right! We Norwegians know how to throw a party!)

There is one last thing we do before opening presents. (The suspense is already getting to me!!!) Every Christmas Eve, we always read the Christmas story in Luke. It's a nice reminder what the day is really about. We have so much to be thankful for- family together, presents under the tree, a roof over our heads, and especially an amazing Savior who came to die for us!

And of course, this is followed by a mad rush to the tree and hours of shredding wrapping paper and total excitement and ecstasy!

I know this sounds pretty crazy and, well, Norwegian! But here's the really weird part- I absolutely LOVE Christmas with my family! I wouldn't have the jam-packed day any other way! I hope everyone has a wonderful time during this special holiday! Enjoy your family's unique and special traditions (unless of course, like me, your forced to eat Lutefisk against your will. In that case, you should run!)

Merry Christmas!
Happy New Year y'all!

~Anna

Exams...Need I say more?

You might be wondering, "What do college kids do the weekend before exams?"

...................................Study..........................that's it....................I'm really not kidding.

My first exam was this morning at 8 am. As I pushed out the door reciting math equations in my head, I was greeted with a blast of O degree weather (oh, did I mention -20 if you factor in the windchill?!?)
Peachy right? About six hundred choir and orchestra members take part in this special event, including the freshman girl's choir that I'm in, Aurora. This year it is being nationally televised on PBS. (I'll let you know when the dates have been officially decided!)

We've been preparing our individual pieces for months. The last couple weekends we had mass rehearsals for the choirs to practice the five songs that we all sing together. And then last Sunday it fell into full swing...

We had to be back to campus by three for a six hour rehearsal that included a walk through of the concert and our first practice with the orchestra. Then on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we had three hours rehearsals each day, the last being a dress rehearsal to see if the whole show would run smoothly.

Thursday was the first performance, followed by two Friday, one Saturday, and one today. After hours of hard work, we're finally done!

I'm so glad to have been apart of "CAL" this year! Despite the huge time commitment (notice: I have nothing else to write about this week because all I've done is choir stuff), I had a great time! Not only was I apart of a very special Luther tradition that turned out spectacular every performance, but I also became really good friends with some girls that formally I hadn't really known. Plus, my family was able to come for the concert (what's new right?) which was really special for me, knowing that I was performing for them!

What's left may you ask after this exhausting week? It's one word: Sleep! And here I come!!!

Seniors, good luck as you begin to study for finals this week!

~Anna

"We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And, I hope seniors enjoyed a few days off before the stress of finals is upon us!

I traveled back to Texas for the first time this fall, and it felt great!....No literally, the 70 degree weather felt GREAT compared to the freezing (again, literal) weather that is happening in Decorah. I can tell you, northern winters aren't for the faint of heart!

My sister, Emily, and I flew home on Tuesday afternoon. I've gotten to see all of my best friends throughout the week! And I've eaten more Mexican food and drank more Starbucks than is humanly possible (but you have to understand my deep, true love for a good cup of coffee!)

Thanksgiving Day was perfect! My grandparents were here, plus many family friends too! We had a great, traditional meal with my personal favorite: turkey, gravy, and mashed potatoes! And, we had an array of homemade pies to finish off the already delicious meal! And then, what better way to celebrate time with family and friends than by watching America's favorite team win in football? (That would be the Dallas Cowboys, of course!)

Overall, it's been a great week! It's hard to believe that in three more I'll be home again for Christmas Break. This semester will be gone in the blink of an eye!

Again, I hope everyone enjoyed their break. Safe travels heading home or back to campus!

~Anna

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. You don't really have that much more to do except maybe pack a bag, and yet there are a thousand and one random things to check off your list before the awaited travel day. I'm sure everyone knows that Thanksgiving is just a few days away, which means that I'm in the crazy pre-travel days right now!

I'm trying to finish my homework and pack my bag and clean my room and eat up all my food before boarding a plane tomorrow afternoon! Uff da! (That's Norwegian slang for "Oh my goodness!" or "Woah!" or "Holy Cow!"...you get the idea!)

I'm also trying to balance all of this with choir practices. We're getting into the intense last two weeks before the "Christmas at Luther" Concert, and it's crazy! All choirs have to be back on campus on Sunday for a SIX hour rehearsal. Uff da!!!

Don't get me wrong- I love the holidays! This will be my first time home, and I'm so excited! I'll get to see my family and my friends for a very special "first time back from college" reunion! It'll be great! I do believe all my girlfriends and I are planning out a big slumber party! (Because that's what adult mature college women do!) And who isn't excited for the greatest holiday meal ever!!! Oh yeah, the travel is worth the stress!

I hope everyone has a very joyous, safe, and thankful break!

~Anna

"Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. It's so weird to have the season over. I really miss seeing everybody but the extra time is nice! Some of the girls and I have started going to kick boxing classes in the evenings- I can't believe how hard we work, but it's also a ton of fun!

On Thursday, I registered for classes! I'm taking "It's a Conspiracy" over J-term which is a three week class we take in January. It's a class that analyzes conspiracy theories in American history- I'm psyched! Next semester, I'm in more Paideia, more math, more Latin, and Intro to the Bible, a religion class which should be interesting....over all I'm really happy with my schedule! I'm still debating a classics major, a history major, a math major, or multiple- we'll have to wait and see!!!

Tonight is the first mass rehearsal for the "Christmas at Luther" concert in early December. I'm so excited to be a part of it! This is the first time that all the choirs will be together to really hear what the pieces sound like!

Oh, and I'm still freezing. Evidently it will be like this for a while, and could quite possibly get even worse. (Although these are just rumors; no one can say for sure!) ;)

I hope ya'll have a super duper great week!

~Anna

"The Lord has done great things for us; of which we are glad." -Psalm 126: 3

My Spur of the Moment Adventure & Phonothan!

This past week has been awesome!

(My fellow callers and I at the right. I'm the tallest in the back!)

Allison (who is also a blogger) invited me to accompany her St. Paul to watch her high school volleyball team in the state tournament. I dropped all of my plans spur of the moment on Friday to have a fun girl's weekend with her! We met her mom for the first game on Friday. We stayed at a cute little hotel near the capitol. The next day we went from shopping to more volleyball to more shopping.....the night ended with an adventure through Rochester as we hunted down a Starbucks before heading back to Luther. We also sang the entire ride home for one killer weekend!

Today I worked hard to get all of my homework done early because tonight was Phonothan! Ten girls on our floor in Brandt volunteered to call alum asking for donations through the Luther College Phonothan! It ended up being a ton of fun! We decided to dress "crazy and gaudy" to get us in the right fun mood! We looked hilarious- big hair, crazy clothes, and tons of makeup! Definitely the best dressed there! We called from 6:30 to 9:30, and it went really well. Christy even got someone to donate $1,000, and we surpassed our goal for the evening! Plus, I got to call a lot of my family which was really neat!

The last two days, we've seen continuous snow which is crazy considering the 70 degree weather at the beginning of the week. It finally feels like I'm in the north! I can't believe I have five months of this- here we go!

I hope everyone has a warm, fun week!

~Anna

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. It should've been a blast! A super great time with awesome memories...

Saturday was the JV Conference Tournament. We were 7-1 this season, so we were pumped up to go to Waverly yesterday in hopes of coming home as champions. It didn't turn out quite as planned though- we placed fourth with two wins and two losses. It's a respectable record, but not the one we had hoped for. On the up side, my leg held up, and I had playing time in three out of the four matches.

We left for the tournament on Friday so that we wouldn't have to leave really early on Saturday morning to get there. I was pretty bummed to miss Halloween on campus because lots of children from the town of Decorah come to Brandt Hall for trick-or-treating. I was really excited to dress up for them and to hand out candy, until I realized we wouldn't be there...But, we stayed at the house of one of the sophomores on the team, and I ended up getting to hand out candy to adorable kids anyway. Plus, we had a great home-cooked meal that night! And it was awesome to be with the team one more time before the season ends. It was like having a big sleepover with fifteen girls- quite the bonding experience! :)

When we got home on Saturday, some of the girls and I rushed around, getting ready for a costume party that was going on last night. I was psyched! I had a great costume planned out- Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's! I felt like a princess in my jewelry and long black gloves! It should've been a spectacular night!

However, we only stayed at the party for about ten minutes. By the time we arrived, it was already winding down and switching locations. Our group split up, and I ended up driving around town with a couple girls. Total bust right?

Not even close! I had the time of my life last night! I spent time with some great girls, getting to know some for the first time and getting to know others that much better! We looked hilarious, and I don't think we ever stopped laughing!

Like I said- I was really looking forward to this weekend; it was supposed to be a blast... and it was!

I hope y'all had a fun, safe Halloween!

~Anna

"I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong nad take heart and wait for the Lord." -Psalm 27:13-14
